Caring for Your Porsche Tires

The tires on your Porsche vehicle are not only an important part of how your car gets down the road, they are also a part of your Porsche style and image. Keeping your tires and wheels clean is just one way to make sure your Porsche is the envy of everyone you know.

It’s important, first, to understand how wheels get dirty. The main source of dirt and grime on your wheels is brake dust. Brake pad adhesive is at the root of most of the wheel dirt problems. When that adhesive residue gets wet, it can etch your wheels. In addition, the metal filings of your brakes become hot during braking and may burn tiny holes in the finish of your wheels. You might also find small droplets that look like tar from the road on your wheels, which is probably re-polymerized adhesive.

Choose the least aggressive way to clean your wheels. Start with a car wash detergent to see if that does the trick. If that doesn’t get your Porsche tires lean, you can try a tire cleaner. Some of the more popular brands tend to be acidic and can affect the finish on your wheels, so be careful here. Try to find a wheel cleaner that is pH balanced.

Driving Green in your Porsche

Just because you have one of the best performance cars on the planet doesn’t mean you’re not concerned about the planet. There are things you can do every day in the way you drive your Porsche and the way you take care of your Porsche to help out the environment around you.

One thing you can do to drive green in your Porsche is to keep your engine running at peak performance. When a spark plug is misfiring, for example, you can lose as much as a third of your fuel effeciency. Replacing fluids and filters are all part of this, as well. Keep up on your regular maintenance schedule. It not only keeps your Porsche running smooth, it helps the environment.

You should also keep your tires inflated and aligned. As you probably know, just a few pounds of tire pressure low can make your engine work harder and use more gas. The same is true when your wheels are misaligned. Properly inflated tires also last longer, and in the long run mean fewer old tires that have to be scrapped.

You should also drive with gas use in mind. Try to avoid accelerating suddenly, and avoid speeding. Both of these practices make your engine work harder, use more gas, and cause more wear and tear on your vehicle.

Keep your Porsche running green. Schedule your regular maintenance today.

Remembering the Porsche 959

If you’re a Porsche enthusiast, you probably know the Porsche 959. The 959 was the most advanced sports car ever built by Porsche at the time. It featured a 2.8 liter flat six cylinder twin turbo engine paired with a six speed manual. It had all wheel drive, antilock brakes and a double wishbone suspension.

The height of the car could be adjusted from inside the cockpit, allowing the driver to lower the height of the vehicle based on whether they were driving on the highway or on choppy pavement.

There are many curious stories about the Porsche 959 development. The chief engineer delayed the release because they wanted to get it just right, for example. It was also built to be sold legally and driven on public roads.

The Porsche 959 could do go from zero to 60 in 3.6 seconds. It had a top speed of 197 miles per hour. It origially sold for around $225,000, but today a used 959 in decent shape will go for around $375,000 or more.

Your Porsche’s Suspension

One of the most important systems in your Porsche vehicle is the suspension. Most Porsche cars have a finely tuned suspension that is specifically designed to increase the car’s performance. If your suspension isn’t functioning correctly, your ride will be rough and you may have a hard time controlling the vehicle.

Shocks and struts are an integral part of the suspension in your Porsche. In some cases, you might find that your shocks and struts become warn. This is especially the case if your car does an excessive amount of bouncing over bumps, or if you lean hard into the corners. You can look behind the wheel to find the shock or strut, and look for leaking fluid.

Ball joints also tend to wear out over time. Ball joints can cause the car to not steer properly, causing you to lose control.

You should make sure to check your shocks or struts frequently for leaking. If your car isn’t handling the way it should, have the suspension checked. Make sure to have your mechanic check your ball joints at least a couple of times in a year.

Finally, make sure that your mechanic lubricates the ball joints and suspension components when you get your oil changed.
